Trump fatigue
Trump is catnip for political junkies, but even here the appeal may be fading. According to an analysis of roughly 3,000 websites by the analytics firm Parse.ly, the demand for political stories about Trump (measured by average views per post about him) declined 37.8 percent in the first six months of 2019 from its level in the six months after his inauguration, said Kelsey Arendt, a senior data analyst with Parse.ly.
EPA Aims To Roll Back Limits On Methane Emissions From Oil And Gas Industry
The Trump administration is proposing to slash restrictions on the oil and gas industry for methane emissions, a greenhouse gas that is a powerful driver of climate change.
The Trump administration argues it would save the oil and gas industry $17 million to $19 million annually in compliance costs. But that's "such a small fraction of the industry total cash flow that it's just laughable," says Harvard University's Steven Wofsy, a professor of atmospheric and environmental science.
Nation's Largest Hispanic Journalist Group Drops Fox News Sponsorship
The move will cost the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) some money since Fox was signed up to be a sponsor of their upcoming conference.
The group published a letter to its members Thursday saying it will return more than $16,000 donated by Fox News to sponsor its upcoming conference in San Antonio.
"To accept financial support from an entity that perpetuates the spread of disinformation to the public about the Hispanic and Latino community risks the integrity and credibility of NAHJ's 35 year mission," wrote Hugo Balta, the association's president.
Americans Broadly Support Red Flag Laws
Strong majorities of Americans from across the political spectrum support laws that allow family members or law enforcement to petition a judge to temporarily remove guns from a person who is seen to be a risk to themselves or others, according to a new APM Research Lab/Guns & America/Call To Mind survey.
These laws, often called extreme risk protection order laws, or red flag laws, have received renewed attention after 31 people were killed during mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Variations of these red flag laws are in place in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
U.S. Appeals Court In Chicago Again Upholds Laws Banning Assault Weapons
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held that two gun owners, who sued over the gun control measures in the county where Chicago is located, "have not come forward with a compelling reason to revisit" since the last time the same court examined a similar challenge — out of the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, which was also sued after passing an assault weapons ban.

Quiet Response Expected

Throughout, Fox has remained officially silent. Its spokespeople have not offered a rebuttal to the president’s criticism. A spokesperson once again declined to comment on Wednesday.
The president’s anti-Fox tweets serve as a kind of counterweight against Democrats’ accusation that the network is far too sympathetic in its news coverage of and commentary about Trump.

The Republican campaign consultant said of the family’s political activities, “To call them under the radar is an understatement. They are underground!” Another former Koch adviser said, “They’re smart. This right-wing, redneck stuff works for them. They see this as a way to get things done without getting dirty themselves.” Rob Stein, a Democratic political strategist who has studied the conservative movement’s finances, said that the Kochs are “at the epicenter of the anti-Obama movement. But it’s not just about Obama. They would have done the same to Hillary Clinton. They did the same with Bill Clinton. They are out to destroy progressivism.”

In Virginia, 2 Churches Feel The Aftermath Of Trump's Racist Rhetoric
https://www.npr.org/2019/08/12/749410060/in-virginia-2-churches-feel-the-aftermath-of-trumps-racist-rhetoric
it might not be racist, but still is kind of ignorant.......
"Where'd their parents come from? Are they Americans?" Cook asked. "Just because she was born in America does not make her American."
and the later......
"Doesn't it?" I asked. "Doesn't it legally, though, under the Constitution?"
"Under the Constitution, yes," Cook acknowledged, then paused. "But I don't know how to express that, to make you understand that I wish she, I wish they, well — I don't want any Muslims in America."
the problem with this person's argument is that it makes it very easy to assume that to her being American means being white or Christian, in which case it does make it a little racist.

Labs and cows also release different greenhouse gases. To grow meat in the lab, you need electricity, which means CO2 emissions. That CO2 lingers in the atmosphere for thousands of years, whereas the methane released by cows lasts more like 12 years. Powering future lab-grown meat facilities with renewables will be essential to improving the climate-wrecking profile of meat.

THE INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE firm Cloudflare said it would cut service on Sunday evening to 8chan, the infamous online forum that has housed numerous posts and manifestos linked to horrific mass shootings in the United States and around the world. The move comes nearly two days after a mass shooting at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart left 20 dead and dozens wounded. The alleged gunman appears to have posted his manifesto on 8chan 20 minutes before the shooting. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince spoke with WIRED Sunday night about his decision.

Self-Driving Trucks Are Ready to Do Business in Texas
https://www.wired.com/story/self-driving-trucks-ready-business-texas
For now, there will be a “safety driver” at the wheel to monitor the 18-wheeler, and make sure it doesn’t do anything wonky. (These drivers also guide the trucks on and off the highways, and into distribution terminals; most companies working on automated trucks have focused on simple highway driving, and plan to leave urban driving to humans for the foreseeable future.) But eventually, the company would like to carry freight on fully self-driving trucks that snake from Dallas to almost every corner of the Lone Star State: to Laredo on the Mexico border, to Austin in the middle of the state, and to El Paso in the west.

analogue drugs
https://news.bloomberglaw.com/featured/americas-secret-drug-war/part1
"As is standard in the spice industry, they labeled products “not for human consumption,” and advertised them as herbal incense or potpourri. That’s an attempt to comply with the analogue law, which puts defendants on the hook if the government can prove the product was meant to be smoked instead of, say, used to create a relaxing scent in the living room."
- this would seem as if you're purposely skirting the law. Is it going to lay that was not forgiven consumption but yet sell its people to smoke that seems against the spirit of the law.

Rebuplican says "Climate Change" and does not burst into flaims
https://www.wired.com/story/senates-transportation-plan-reckons-climate-change/
The bill is a long way from becoming law. It has to go through the House and then through President Trump; lawmakers also will have to figure out where to find those billions of dollars. But for environmental groups, getting this bill out of committee alone is a win. “Republicans have actually said ‘climate change,’ and put money towards it,” says Ann Shikany, who focuses on infrastructure for the National Resources Defense Council. “It’s a fantastic first step.”
Painting a bleak picture
In recent years, Rhodesian iconography has gained popularity among young men with white nationalist leanings. Infatuation with Rhodesia first received media attention after it was discovered that Dylann Roof—the white supremacist who killed 9 black churchgoers in 2015—had a personal website called “Last Rhodesian,” where he posted his manifesto. Soon after the mass shooting, we learned about Roof’s idolization of Rhodesia: The territory was led by Ian Smith, who famously declared that “the white man is master of Rhodesia. He has built it, and he intends to keep it.” It was a state defined by military conflicts with African people. To Dylann Roof and many others, Rhodesia is a symbol of militarized white nationalism and the fantasy of a race war.
