the Amazon trap

https://prospect.org/economy/how-amazon-uses-lending-to-control-small-businesses/

Not sure why Amazon gets such a pass on this. Any other business and the federal government would stick their nose in this situation.

"""
But they also indicate that the primary motivation behind Amazon’s lending program is not short-term financial gain, but rather the corollary effects of making third-party sellers deeply indebted to Amazon.

Facebook lies, and I'm not shocked

The real problem is that Facebook profits partly by amplifying lies and selling dangerous targeting tools that allow political operatives to engage in a new level of information warfare. Its business model exploits our data to let advertisers custom-target people, show us each a different version of the truth and manipulate us with hyper-customized ads — ads that, as of two weeks ago, can contain blatantly false and debunked information if they’re run by a political campaign,” she continued. “As long as Facebook prioritizes profit over healthy discourse, they can’t avoid damaging democracies

Cloudflare ditches 8chan

https://www.wired.com/story/cloudflare-8chan-support-ddos/

THE INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE firm Cloudflare said it would cut service on Sunday evening to 8chan, the infamous online forum that has housed numerous posts and manifestos linked to horrific mass shootings in the United States and around the world. The move comes nearly two days after a mass shooting at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart left 20 dead and dozens wounded. The alleged gunman appears to have posted his manifesto on 8chan 20 minutes before the shooting. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince spoke with WIRED Sunday night about his decision.

Painting a bleak picture

https://www.wired.com/story/white-nationalists-have-co-opted-fan-fiction/

In recent years, Rhodesian iconography has gained popularity among young men with white nationalist leanings. Infatuation with Rhodesia first received media attention after it was discovered that Dylann Roof—the white supremacist who killed 9 black churchgoers in 2015—had a personal website called “Last Rhodesian,” where he posted his manifesto. Soon after the mass shooting, we learned about Roof’s idolization of Rhodesia: The territory was led by Ian Smith, who famously declared that “the white man is master of Rhodesia. He has built it, and he intends to keep it.” It was a state defined by military conflicts with African people. To Dylann Roof and many others, Rhodesia is a symbol of militarized white nationalism and the fantasy of a race war.

BROADBAND ISSUES?

https://www.wired.com/story/having-broadband-issues-tool-learn-local-laws/

To help illustrate those decisions, the Pew Charitable Trusts Wednesday launched the State Broadband Policy Explorer. You can use it to find out which agency in your state, if any, funds programs to expand broadband access in rural areas, check whether your state has laws restricting cities from building their own "municipal broadband" networks, or just find out how your state defines "broadband." You can view a list of policies in your state and filter them by category, year, or both.
The tool doesn't yet have a category for net neutrality, a hot-button state-level issue after the FCC repealed federal net neutrality rules in 2017. But you can find some related laws in categories like "competition and regulation" and "infrastructure access."

I always thought it weird how Peter Thiel, who is as I understand it, a very independent and libertarian thinker, would create such a company that only heightens the police state like palantir does.

Disney's finalizes Fox deal

Disney-Fox Entertainment Merger Is Official In $71.3 Billion Deal

https://www.npr.org/2019/03/20/705009029/disney-officially-owns-21st-century-fox

It will be interesting to see how Disney+ plays out. Now that Apple also announce a streaming service the space is getting a little bit crowded. Will be interesting if Apple and Amazon get an extra push in streaming with the device tie ins. A purchase of Roku by Disney or Netflix could be interesting.
